Why not liquid calcium? Or, why we chose a calcium chew pt. 2

We are often asked about our format here at Seen.  One more unusual kind of calcium supplement is not a calcium chew, calcium gummy, or the traditional pill, but actually a liquid calcium supplement.  You might have seen this on drugstore shelves: liquid calcium looks a little like a bottle of Pepto Bismol and needs to be refrigerated after opening.

Liquid calcium supplements are often promoted as convenient and easy to take, especially for those who have trouble swallowing pills, like many of our customers here at Seen. One of the most common forms is liquid calcium citrate, which doesn’t require stomach acid for absorption and can be taken with or without food. However, while liquid calcium may seem convenient at first glance, it comes with several drawbacks. Like other forms of calcium supplements, liquid calcium uses synthetic calcium, which doesn’t absorb well and can cause GI side effects.  Most common are nausea, gas, and constipation. Also, most liquid calcium products require refrigeration, have shorter shelf lives, and must be carefully measured — adding hassle to your daily routine.

Another issue with liquid calcium is the ingredient list. To make it taste tolerable, many brands add sugars, artificial flavors, or preservatives — ingredients that definitely aren’t necessary in any supplement.  And while liquid calcium citrate may be convenient, it’s still an isolated nutrient. Without the presence of co-factors like magnesium, phosphorus, and vitamin D, your body may not fully utilize the calcium you’re consuming. That’s why we created a real food–based alternatives in our calcium chew, which provides a cleaner, more complete approach to bone health without the compromises of traditional liquid calcium.

Each of our calcium chews is made with just four real food ingredients: organic dates, almonds, milk minerals, and vitamin D-rich mushrooms. It’s a whole-food approach that delivers not only calcium, but also supporting nutrients like phosphorus, magnesium, potassium, zinc, and copper — all naturally found in bones.

Another advantage of the calcium chew is vitamin D. Vitamin D is key for calcium absorption, yet many liquid calcium supplements use synthetic vitamin D or skip it altogether. Seen’s chews use sun-exposed white button mushrooms to provide a natural source of vitamin D, making the calcium more usable by your body.

Convenience also matters. Unlike liquid calcium citrate, our calcium chew doesn’t need refrigeration, doesn’t require measuring, and doesn’t make a mess. Each chew also tastes naturally sweet from dates — no added sugar needed. Just the opposite, liquid calcium can be unpleasant to taste, inconvenient to store, and easy to forget.

While liquid calcium and calcium citrate supplements may offer some benefits, they often fall short in convenience, taste, and nutritional completeness. Seen’s calcium chew offers a better, food-based alternative that makes supporting your bones both easy and enjoyable.

While we appreciate that each of these formats might have some benefits (perhaps if you are on a liquid diet, for example), we chose our calcium chew format only after carefully considering all alternatives and really believe we have the perfect package: real food calcium in a tasty, portable little bite of delicious nutrition!
